"How many minutes of battery do I get?" is the first question everyone asks about a UPS. It is also the wrong question — the right one is: "what needs to happen before the batteries run out?"
Three realistic scenarios
Ride-through (2–5 minutes): If you have a generator, the UPS only needs to bridge the gap until the generator starts and stabilises. Oversizing batteries here wastes money and space.
Graceful shutdown (10–20 minutes): No generator? Then runtime must cover an orderly shutdown of your systems, triggered automatically by the UPS management software.
Continuous operation (1+ hours): Some services — emergency lines, payment systems, patient records — must stay up. This needs serious battery capacity or generator integration, sized from measured load, not guesswork.
Load measurement comes first
Runtime tables assume full load, but real loads are usually 40–60% of the UPS rating. We measure your actual consumption over several days before sizing anything.
Batteries age
A battery bank delivers its rated runtime only when new. Design for end-of-life capacity and monitor battery health — otherwise your "30 minutes" is 12 minutes by year four.
