In fifteen years of emergency call-outs, we have almost never seen a failure that gave no warning. These are the seven signs we find most often in the weeks before an incident.
1. Temperature creeping upward
If your room runs warmer each month, your cooling is losing capacity or your load has outgrown it. Both need attention before summer.
2. Cooling units running non-stop
Healthy systems cycle. A unit running at 100% constantly has no headroom for a hot day — or a partner unit failing.
3. UPS alarms being ignored
An alarm that beeps until someone silences it is a message nobody read. Every alarm has a cause.
4. Batteries older than four years
VRLA batteries degrade quietly. Past year four, capacity drops fast — usually discovered during the outage they were meant to cover.
5. No humidity control
Too dry brings static; too humid brings condensation and corrosion. If you don't know your room's humidity, that is itself the warning sign.
6. Dust build-up
Dust on intake filters means dust inside your servers. It also means filter maintenance is being skipped — and probably other maintenance too.
7. Nobody gets alerts
If the room can reach 40°C on a Saturday night without anyone's phone buzzing, your monitoring is not monitoring.
